Director ID and Your SMSF Corporate Trustee: What You Need to Know
What a Director ID actually is
A Director Identification Number (Director ID) is a unique 15-digit identifier issued once to a person, for life, when they first become verified as a company director in Australia. It's separate from your TFN or ABN. It identifies you personally as a director, permanently, across every company you're ever a director of.
Why this matters for your SMSF
If your SMSF has (or will have) a corporate trustee, every member of the fund becomes a director of that trustee company, which means every member needs their own Director ID.
The rule that catches people out
Since 5 April 2022, the law changed: anyone being newly appointed as a director must already hold their Director ID before the appointment takes effect. There's no grace period anymore for new appointments. This isn't something that can be sorted out after the fact.
This matters directly for anyone establishing a new SMSF with a corporate trustee, or switching an existing fund to one: every intended director needs to apply for and receive their Director ID before the company registration/appointment can legally proceed.
Who can apply, and how
Nobody can apply on someone else's behalf. Not your accountant, not your administrator, not anyone else. Each person has to apply for their own Director ID personally, because the process requires verifying their own identity directly with the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS).
The process itself is usually quick if you already have the myID app set up (myID, formerly called myGovID, is the identity verification app and is a separate thing from a standard myGov account):
- Download the myID app and verify your identity if you haven't already (this step can take longer if it's your first time setting it up)
- Go to abrs.gov.au and apply for your Director ID online
- You'll typically receive your Director ID immediately once identity verification succeeds
For most people who already have myID set up, the whole process takes well under 30 minutes.
What if I don't have myID or standard identity documents readily available?
The ABRS also offers a phone application process and a paper form for those who can't use the online/myID method. It takes longer, but nobody is locked out of being able to apply.
The practical takeaway
If you're setting up a new SMSF with a corporate trustee, or switching an existing fund to one, check with every intended member early whether they already hold a Director ID. If they don't, get them started on the application as one of the very first steps. It's genuinely one of the few things in the whole process that can't be fast-tracked or done on someone's behalf, so it's worth not leaving it until last.
